Edible Paper for Food Printers

The papers differ in taste. While wafer paper is bland and flavorless, sugar paper is sweet with a hint of vanilla. As for physical properties, sugar paper has a dense consistency; it is quite flexible and practically opaque. This allows for an almost perfect image when printing on a food printer. The porous structure of wafer paper makes it more fragile and thinner than sugar paper. Wafer paper for food printers is available in two modifications:
- Thin paper: soft to the touch, bends easily, and has a translucent structure. It will not withstand highly saturated colors during printing and is not suitable for decorating certain surfaces. However, if you need to print small elements like butterflies, flowers, or leaves, this type of wafer paper is the ideal choice.
- Thick paper: practically opaque and inflexible. It is difficult to cut complex shapes out of it, but it is perfect for printing relatively large images without full-color coverage. A picture printed on this edible paper will be duller than on sugar paper.
Therefore, to get a bright, rich edible picture when printing on a food printer, use sugar paper. Thanks to its durability, it is perfect for placing on buttercream or jelly cake coatings. If you plan to decorate your dessert with small elements that need to be cut out beforehand, use thin wafer paper. For printing images with a pale background or no background at all, use high-density wafer paper.
